The Sheikh's Secret Love Child (The Sheikh's Baby Surprise Book 2) Read online

Page 8

Zak giggled at her, showing his tiny teeth. Rosie wrapped her arms around him and drew his warm body close, blowing a raspberry on his shoulder.

She imagined, sometimes, that the compassionate man she thought she’d met would have played with him like this. He would have thrown his son up in the air, causing him to squeal. He would have rolled around on the floor with him, not caring about how he looked, so long as his son was laughing. She imagined his strong arms around both of them as they drifted off to sleep on the couch, her chin falling every so often toward her chest as baby Zak cooed beneath them.

Somehow, despite all that Hakan had put her through, she still had these images in her mind. Despite how cold and callous he had turned out to be, she still daydreamed about the other Hakan, the Hakan she had fallen head over heels for. She knew these false spurts of happiness weren’t doing her any good. They were poisonous, but they helped her get from day to day. And she supposed that was all that mattered.

  ELEVEN

The following day, Rosie loaded Zak’s car seat into Amy’s recently-purchased van (which Rosie had teased her endlessly about), and the four of them—Amy, Rosie, Marco, and Zak—swept off to the Seattle Zoo. The perpetual October drizzle had paused for a few hours, and they cheerfully walked throughout the exhibits together, Amy and Rosie hanging back as Marco leapt up and down at the glass windows, pointing out the animals for little Zak. Zak cooed in his chair, his eyes bright with the chaos of the afternoon.

Rosie knelt beside her son at the tiger cage, lifting him into the air and bobbing him slightly. They gazed at the mighty beast before them, one that Zak was familiar with from the animal DVDs she’d rented from the library. The cat’s yellow eyes looked at them sternly for a moment before she erupted into a mighty yawn, showing layers of teeth that extended deep into her mouth. Zak brought his tiny hands together and clapped erratically, thinking this display of animalistic terror was one of the greatest shows on earth.

Amy and Rosie took the kids to the zoo’s ice cream parlor at the end of their tour, and they sat in the strips of last sunlight. Rosie spooned vanilla ice cream to her son, and Amy gobbled up hers. Drips of chocolate oozed down both her and Marco’s faces. Like mother, like son, Rosie thought, smiling to herself. Perhaps she and Zak would be like that someday.

“So. I told one of Josh’s friends about you,” Amy said, her eyes flashing, much like the tiger’s.

Rosie cocked her head, her heart sinking slightly. “I’m pretty sure I didn’t give my okay for that to happen,” she sassed.

Amy rolled her eyes. “If you won’t get back out there, then I’ll just have to do the work for you,” she murmured. “Please. Just go out to dinner with him. Or just drinks, I don’t care.”

“Are you going to tell me more about him?”

Amy bit her lip. “Well, he’s obviously an engineer—but it’s not all bad,” she teased. “He graduated from the University of Iowa. He’s a Midwestern man and he’s a musician on the side. He plays piano and guitar, and he’s getting a band together. He’s only thirty-three, so it’s not like, a midlife crisis or anything,” Amy affirmed. She took another lick of her ice cream, and the chocolate zonked to her pants. She didn’t seem to notice.

The music element did intrigue Rosie. She cocked her head. “What does he look like?”

“He’s dark-haired. A dark complexion, with a nice beard, actually,” Amy told her. “I think if you saw him in a bar, you’d think he was attractive. Maybe he’s not my type—”

“I only like sheikhs,” Rosie said callously.

Amy paused. Marco started nagging her, then, yanking at her shirt, but she leaned forward, her eyes sad. “Rosie. I will not let you linger on this lost love for the rest of your life. It’s not fair to you, and it’s not fair to your son. You both live here, in Seattle. It’s not like you’re going to run off to Timbuktu or wherever to see him. I hate to say this, Rosie, but it’s over. It’s completely over.”

Rosie turned her head toward her son, her friend’s words stinging. She felt tiny tears form, but shoved them back, knowing she had to be strong. Zak had begun to fall asleep, which would give her a bit of time to herself until later that evening. Time to herself was unheard of, almost alien.

Amy shrugged, then, and they got to their feet, allowing the moment to pass. “I’ll send his number to you, and you can decide for yourself,” she said finally. “I don’t want to make up your mind for you, but I’m pleading with you to at least give it a try.”

They sat silently as Amy drove Rosie back to her apartment. She clung to the tiny card on which Amy had written Jared, the musician-engineer’s number.

“Call me!” She still remembered the way Hakan had written on his business card, so swiftly filling her heart with hope. Despite Osman telling her to get rid of it, she still had the card, hidden beneath her tax forms on the kitchen counter. Sometimes, late at night, she looked at it: the only relic, besides her son, that spoke of their time together.

  TWELVE

The following week, after several nights of arguing with Amy, of lonely dismay, and finally, some kind of resolution, Rosie found herself sitting at a table in a Mexican restaurant. She checked her phone for the time, feeling anxiety nibble at her stomach. She was ten minutes early, and already dreading the coming evening.

Finally, a handsome man—tall, broad-shouldered—entered the restaurant, moving quickly on long legs. He wore jeans and a band T-shirt, looking the right kind of Seattle rugged.

Rosie stood up, bringing her fingers to her hair. She recognized that she was suddenly nervous.

  “Rosie?” the man asked.

  “Jared, right?”

She shook his hand, feeling the clamminess of his palm. He wiped his hands on his jeans as he sat down, apologizing. “It’s quite cold out there. Hasn’t stopped raining in days.”

“Guess you’re not used to that, huh? Since you’re from the Midwest?”

Jared picked up his menu, grinning at her.

A fine smile, Rosie affirmed. Amy hadn’t been wrong. This guy was very good-looking, and probably her type—or at least he would have been at some point in her twenties. Of course, she wasn’t in her twenties anymore.

They ordered margaritas and tacos and placed their menus together in a tidy pile.

Jared leaned toward her on his elbows, eager. “So. You work with Amy, don’t you?”

Rosie nodded. “We’ve worked together for years. She’s my best friend.”

  “She seems…”

“Intense,” Rosie finished, finding herself laughing. “Yeah, she basically forced me to go out on a date. Since my son was born, I haven’t been out much.”

Jared nodded, his eyes bright. He seemed unfazed by the fact that she had a son. “You don’t seem old enough to be a mom.”

Rosie blushed. “I might be older than I look. But I don’t regret not going out these past couple years. Raising my son has been my top priority. He’s the thing I care most about in the world.” Somehow, she needed this stranger to know that.

“I understand,” Jared said, his voice solemn. “My mother was a single mom. I don’t know how she did it, but I attribute all of my accomplishments to her.”

Rosie felt his honesty through his words. At least this guy told the truth, she thought.

She found herself falling easily into conversation with him. Sure, her stomach wasn’t falling over itself; sure, she wasn’t experiencing a cold sweat, as she had with Hakan. But in many ways, she knew, she’d grown up since then. Perhaps this was how adults dated. They didn’t lose their heads over it.

After their second round of margaritas, Jared asked her if she was interested in having a walk by the water. “I know it’s winter, but there’s something about a walk after dinner—especially out there,” Jared began.

Rosie held up her hand, understanding completely. “I’d love to,” she whispered.

She followed him from the restaurant, after they’d both paid separately, and they str
olled through the grass toward the dark water.

Rosie thought of her son, who was under the care of her mother once more. Clarice had been excited about Rosie’s date, telling her that finding a suitable man who could support her and her baby was an absolute priority. Rosie had silently rolled her eyes as she smeared lipstick over her lips. In the mirror, she had blinked at herself, shocked. She hadn’t worn proper makeup in ages, and was surprised that she still looked good, youthful, vital. Like herself, before she’d had Zak.

Jared turned to her, gesturing upward. “I can’t believe it, but we have stars tonight.”

Rosie blinked, gazing up at them. Seattle was so often cloud-covered, and the city lights were usually far too bright to see anything. But Jared was right; the stars cut through the night.

  “They’re beautiful.”

“Out in Iowa, we could see them every night,” he said softly. “I kind of miss that.”

“Why did you move out here?”

Jared meandered closer to the water. “I wanted an adventure. I didn’t know of anything I hadn’t done in the Midwest, and I felt like I needed to move west to find something. Maybe to find myself. And perhaps to find love.” He eyed her briefly.

Rosie felt unmoved by his statement, but gave him a quick smile anyway. She allowed the silence to linger.

“I’ve always felt calm by the water,” Jared began again. “I didn’t have it so much growing up. And now I like to come out here and think.”

Rosie saw that they were nearing the Edgewater Hotel, where her baby had been conceived. This particular stretch of water had been incredibly important to that time in her life, had made her feel less crazy, somehow.

She closed her eyes, breathing in the salty air. “I know what you mean. It’s like a reminder of how small you truly are. I think it’s healthy to remember that.”

Jared agreed. “I know there’s a scientific reason behind it.”

“But sometimes you don’t want to know it,” Rosie laughed.

“Most often, I do,” Jared said. Such an engineer. “But I suppose it’s enough to just breathe out here. And it’s nice to have company.”

Rosie agreed. “I haven’t seen anyone besides my patients, my mother and my baby in ages. Tell me. I’ve been thinking quite a bit about something lately, and I need your opinion.” She paused before speaking, building the anticipation. “Do you believe in fate?”

The question hung in the air for a moment before Jared chuckled slightly, a laugh that came from high in his throat. “Fate?”

Rosie nodded, her eyes shining. “Yeah. Fate.”

Jared bobbed his head from left to right. “Well, let me see, here. In some ways, I’ve always linked the idea of fate with, you know, religion and Christianity, and all that. I grew out of that stuff ages ago. I had to go to church as a kid—”

  “Me too,” Rosie whispered.

“—and I felt, at a very young age, that it was all, essentially baloney. We don’t have an ultimate ‘reason’ to be alive, like they say. Definitely not.”

“So you don’t think you were born to be an engineer?”

“I think that my skillsets are appropriate for engineering. I think I work very well in that environment. But if I had chosen something like, say, teaching, I can’t say I wouldn’t have been good at that, as well.”

“We aren’t called to be who we are, then. And we aren’t called to love who we love. Is that what you mean?” Rosie asked, frowning.

The man shook his head. “I just can’t believe in something so far-fetched,” he murmured. “I think we can bring ourselves to love good mates. People who will learn to love us for all our weird quirks. People who will care for us in sickness and in health. But I certainly don’t believe in soulmates. And, to answer your question, I absolutely don’t believe in fate.”

Rosie bit her lip, gazing out at the sea. Her mind drew a picture of Hakan, dressed in the traditional garb of the head of state. Did he still believe that fate had brought them together? Or was that just pretty talk that had caused her to fall for him more quickly?

She shook her head, trying to clear her mind. “I think you’re probably right. The entire concept is the stuff of fairytales,” she murmured.

“And I think so much of living the kind of life that involves divorcing yourself from concepts like that. This way, you can choose your own destiny,” Jared said softly, taking her hand.

Rosie’s first instinct was to draw her hand back, to flee. But she wanted to live in the conversation he was creating, in which they were both reasonable adults who agreed that concepts like “fate” were the stuff of fiction. She tried to force herself to remain in the moment.

They walked down by the water for a bit longer before Rosie came up with an excuse to leave. She kissed him on the cheek, watching the disappointment bloom like a flower on his face. They both knew, in that moment, that fate wasn’t in their favor, although Jared would never admit it. And wasn’t that ironic?

  THIRTEEN

The following day, Rosie and Amy stood side by side, swishing in their scrubs. They were preparing a patient who had just gone into labor. Amy thrust a pillow beneath the young woman’s back while Rosie checked her watch; her shift was due to end in just a few minutes.

“This will be you in not too long,” the blond woman moaned, looking at Amy’s bump. “But hopefully you won’t be alone like I am.”

Amy gave her a warm smile, glancing at Rosie. “Sometimes, it’s better to be alone. At least that way you won’t have to baby both your husband and your newborn.”

The girls exchanged a brief giggle, while Rosie spoke with the doctor about the girl’s progress. She still had a long way to go, even as sweat rolled down her forehead and cheeks. She looked like she was close to crying, and the pain was growing all the time. Rosie remembered this all too well from her own experience.

Amy and Rosie left the room together, Amy penguin-walking toward the break room. She sighed, giving her best friend a tired look. “Jared called Josh about last night,” she murmured, wanting to keep the conversation intimate. “He said he really liked you, but that he didn’t think it would go anywhere.”

Rosie bowed her head. “He’s a great guy, Amy. He really is. Smart and good-looking and with plenty of aspirations.” They entered the break room and refilled their water bottles, keeping watch over their beepers just in case of emergency. “I just didn’t see myself with him, is all.”

“You’ll never see yourself with anyone unless you try,” Amy said, her shoulders slumping. “Why not give it another try? Why not call him?”

Because it’s not meant to be, Rosie wanted to say. But she knew that Amy would scoff at such a response. The Rosie Amy had known for the past nearly ten years had never gone on about fate. Rather, she’d had her head firmly on her shoulders. She’d been reasonable. Rosie wanted to return to that persona, but she was finding it difficult.

“Maybe I will call him,” Rosie lied. “I see what you mean. And it’s not like he was horrid.”

“You deserve to at least have sex with him,” Amy joked, trying to lighten up. All day, her face had showed that she was in pain, but she was too stubborn to go home.

“You need more water?” Rosie asked, her voice kind. She filled the bottle and handed it back to Amy without response, placing her hand over her head. “You shouldn’t work much longer. You know that. It’s getting too late in the pregnancy.”

“I’m trying to save up as much as I can first. That house in the suburbs is more expensive than they talk about,” Amy murmured through her white teeth. “And Josh just bought a condo in the city, so he doesn’t have to commute every single day. You know, because he feels like he’s ‘losing his identity’ or something.”

Rosie frowned, her heart sinking. She hadn’t heard mention of any problem with Amy’s husband.

She sat down beside her friend and placed her hand on her knee. “Amy, I’m so sorry. He needs to be there to take care of you…” Her voice trai
led off.

But Amy only shrugged, bringing her fingers up to her friend’s red hair. “I didn’t want to tell you. I didn’t want you to think that love wasn’t real. Besides, you make being a single mom look really, really easy, so complaining about my situation wouldn’t have done anything. I need to grow up. Like you.”

Rosie blinked back tears. “It’s not easy, Amy. I wish I wasn’t doing it alone. And I’m not grown up. Not at all.” She felt herself choking. Nothing seemed fair. Her best friend was being mistreated by someone who was meant to love her, to treasure her and their family. Her shift was ending as they spoke, but Rosie couldn’t walk away from her friend in that moment.
