“And you remember everything the photographer told you?” Nikki quizzed. “She spoke so quickly I could barely understand her.”
“I think I remember it all,” Eva said happily. “Besides, I think the photos are going to turn out great no matter what.”
“True,” Nikki said with a laugh. “This place is gorgeous. What did you call it, again?”
“It’s called Kallas Beach,” Eva told Nikki. “This one was the farthest from the city but had the best scenery.”
Eva stopped searching for Leena for a moment and took in her surroundings. Over the past few months, she and Dimitris had toured many beaches in the area surrounding Athens, wanting to pick the perfect place for their ceremony.
It had been exactly one year since they’d tied the knot—on paper, at least—in DC. This time around, Dimitris insisted that he wanted a celebration that their family and friends could partake in. “Everyone deserves a chance to celebrate this love we’ve found together,” he’d said on the night that he proposed the idea to her.
Eva remembered standing on the deck of Stavros’s yacht, after sharing a beautiful meal with the kind man and his family. She remembered how magical the stars looked that night as she and Dimitris leaned against the boat’s railing, looking out over the sparkling water.
“I couldn’t agree more,” she’d informed him with a kiss.
That had been two months after they decided to move to Athens permanently. She’d fallen in love with the city quickly, and the thought of inviting her loved ones to see its beauty filled her with joy. Knowing they would be visiting to witness and celebrate her love for the man who had made her happier than she’d ever been before made it even better.
She looked again for Leena, and this time spotted her speaking to the musician who was going to play acoustic guitar as the ceremony began. Eva suspected that their conversation indicated that he’d soon begin playing—which meant that soon, she’d be signaled.
She felt butterflies in her stomach as she looked around again, taking in the fringe of green that cropped up at the edge of the coastline, and the pale, jagged rocks. On a pale gray log of driftwood, she spotted two beautiful birds, pitched close together.
A happy pair, she thought. Just like me and Dimitris.
She knew in that moment that she’d be returning to the beach someday soon, with her canvases, paints, and paintbrushes. Once she and Dimitris had relocated to Athens, she had opened a gallery just a block from their home and was planning to show some of her own work in it. She knew from experience that the locals loved paintings of nature.
“We should come spend the day here when you visit this spring,” she told Nikki.
“Definitely!” Nikki said enthusiastically. Though she and Clint usually vacationed in Florida, they’d decided that Athens would be their new vacation destination. Eva had assured her that the mansion she lived in with Dimitris had more than enough room to accommodate them.
Eva heard guitar music start up. She looked over to the crowd and saw Leena wave.
This is it, thought Eva. That’s my cue.
“Looks like they’re ready for you!” Nikki said. She leaned over and kissed Eva’s cheek, and then headed toward the gathering, leading the way.
Eva followed. She walked slowly, so she could savor the moment.
As she walked, she looked out at the hushed crowd. Stavros, his wife Katerina, and Dimitris’s assistant Anna were seated toward the front. Behind them, Eva spotted Tahj, looking hip in a bright red button-up. A few of her other friends from the art community in DC were also in attendance, and they beamed at Eva as she passed. She offered a little wave, and Tahj returned it.
Dimitris stood beneath an archway made of driftwood. His dark hair ruffled in the sea breeze, and a bright smile played across his lips.
Eva couldn’t look away from him as she neared the archway. She felt a knot in her throat. Don’t cry, she told herself. Don’t cry.
She saw tears glistening in Dimitris’s eyes, which made it harder for her to keep her composure. She felt so lucky to be walking toward the handsome man before her.
I will remember this moment for the rest of my life, she thought, when she was only a few feet from where he stood.
He smiled at her with an expression of awe, the sea glistening behind him. Eva could taste the salty sea air and was aware of several photographers crouched in various positions, snapping away to capture the moment. A breeze played across her cheeks.
When she reached Dimitris, she stopped. She positioned herself across from him, as they had practiced the evening before. Her hands trembled as Dimitris reached for them, but then steadied once their fingers intertwined. She felt filled with gratitude as the officiant led them through the ceremony that they’d planned, and though she tried to hold back her tears, she could not.
“Do you promise to protect, love and cherish this woman with your whole heart and soul?” the officiant asked.
“I do,” Dimitris said.
The officiant turned to Eva. “And do promise to love, honor, and cherish the man before you?”
“I do,” Eva said. Her voice wavered, her chin trembled, and a tear escaped her lower lid. She looked into the eyes of the man she loved.
The officiant spoke in a clear voice that rose above the crashing of the waves against the shore. “I am delighted today, in the presence of family and friends, to reaffirm the love and commitment between the two who stand before us now: Eva and Dimitris.”
A cheer rose up from the guests, and the musician picked up his guitar. Acoustic tones floated through the air, as if dancing on the breeze. When Dimitris leaned down to kiss Eva, she was sure she’d never been happier.
She was safe now, no more hiding or being alone. She leaned into the kiss, delighted in the knowledge that she had a lifetime of happiness ahead, with the man she adored.
